In this lesson
- compute MACD, the signal line and the histogram step by step
- switch on MACD 12, 26, 9 on Binance and read its panel
- see how many crosses are real signals and how many are noise
Two trains run in the same direction: a fast one and a slow one. When the fast one pulls away, the gap grows – the trend is speeding up. When the slow one catches up, the gap shrinks. MACD measures exactly that gap. Professor Wick stands on the platform and announces: "Mind the gap."
How it is computed#
MACD stands on two exponential moving averages of the closing price:
- MACD = EMA 12 − EMA 26. A positive number: the fast average is above the slow one, the market has sped up upwards recently.
- Signal line = EMA 9 of the MACD values – a smoothed version of the first line.
- Histogram = MACD − signal line. The bars show whether the gap is growing or shrinking.
That is why MACD is drawn in a panel like an oscillator, even though it is made from averages. Walk through it:
Over the candles EMA 12 (blue) and EMA 26 (yellow). In the panel MACD (blue), the signal line (yellow) and the histogram.
Jul 1, 2024: fast EMA 12 = 62,696.51, slow EMA 26 = 64,202.64. MACD is their difference: -1,506.13. The signal line (EMA 9 of MACD) = -1,423.44, the histogram bar = MACD − signal = -82.69.
Where to find it on Binance#
In Original mode: the indicator icon, the Sub Indicator tab, tick MACD, Save. The legend shows MACD(12, 26, 9), and both lines with the histogram appear below the chart.
On the chart below both trains run right over the candles (EMA 12 and EMA 26) and their gap is in the panel below:
- EMA 12
- EMA 26
- MACD 12, 26, 9 (panel below the chart: MACD in blue, signal in yellow, histogram)
Crosses: signal or noise?#
The best-known use: MACD crosses the signal line from below (bullish) or from above (bearish). On 12 July 2024 MACD rose above the signal line with a close of 57,889, and on 29 July the price was at 66,785. Nice. But over the period shown – about 13 months – MACD crossed the signal line 28 times. Some crosses came within a day or two of each other (11 and 12 May, 26 and 28 October).
Click the candle on which MACD (blue) crossed the signal line (yellow) from below.
No candle picked yet.
A cross always comes after the move – MACD is built from averages, and they lag. In a market without a trend the lines intertwine and every cross is just more noise.
28 crosses are not 28 trades
Anyone trading every MACD cross without another filter would pay fees and slippage for dozens of false signals. A cross is information about a change of pace, not an order to buy or sell.
Common myths#
- "MACD predicts a reversal." It confirms one – and late, because it stands on averages.
- "MACD above zero = buy." It only means EMA 12 is above EMA 26.
- "The histogram is volume." The histogram is the difference of MACD and the signal line; it has nothing to do with volume.
Summary
- MACD = EMA 12 − EMA 26; signal line = EMA 9 of MACD; histogram = their difference.
- On Binance MACD(12, 26, 9) is under the Sub Indicator tab.
- A cross with the signal line shows a change of pace – always late.
- 28 crosses in 13 months: without context most of them are noise.
