Forward testing and going live

How to try a strategy in real time without money, when to move to small amounts and by what rule, set in advance, to switch it off.

On this page

In this lesson

  • find out what a forward test is and why a backtest is not enough
  • learn to move to real money step by step
  • set rules in advance for when to switch the strategy off

A backtest and walk-forward work with a past you already know. The final exam is the future: trading by the rules in real time, with no way to "peek ahead". This is called a forward test.

DEMOA test flight first.
A new plane flies without passengers first. A new strategy trades without money first.

1. A forward test without money#

For a few months, trade by the rules on a demo account or just in your journal. Record every signal right when it appears – not afterwards. You are checking two things:

  • Do the results match the backtest? Not exactly – but they should be in a similar range (win rate, average win and loss, drawdown).
  • Can you follow the rules? In a backtest nobody hesitates. In reality people do.

2. Small money#

If the forward test shows nothing worrying, move to small amounts – so small that a loss does not hurt. Real money brings what a demo does not: slippage, outages, withdrawal fees and above all emotions.

3. Scaling up step by step#

Increase the size in steps and by a rule, not by mood. For example: after every 30 trades, if the results are within the backtest range, raise the risk per trade by a quarter – at most to the level in your trading plan.

The switch-off rule#

You make the most important decision in advance: when you will switch the strategy off. For example:

  • the drawdown exceeds 1.5 times the maximum drawdown in the backtest,
  • a losing streak is longer than the longest streak in the backtest,
  • the market changes so fundamentally that the hypothesis no longer holds.

Without such a rule, in a bad period you will think "just a bit longer" – and "just a bit longer" can last a long time and cost a lot.

A successful test is not a guarantee

Even a strategy that passed a backtest, walk-forward and a forward test may not make money in the future. Tests only lower the chance that you are doing something obviously wrong. Risk only money you can afford to lose.

Common myths#

  • "The backtest worked, I am going straight in with the whole account." You skipped the two cheapest steps.
  • "A demo is not real, it is pointless." It shows whether you can follow the rules and reveals mistakes in them.
  • "I will decide when to switch it off when the time comes." When the time comes, emotions will decide.

Summary

  • Forward test = trading by the rules in real time, first without money.
  • Then small amounts and scaling up step by step, by a rule.
  • Set the switch-off rule in advance – based on the drawdown and losing streaks from the backtest.
  • Even successful tests do not guarantee a profit.

Quiz: Testing

5 questions to check what you know from this module. Nothing is saved and you can retake it.

  1. 1. A backtest showed 100% winning trades and a return of over 24,000%. What is most likely?
  2. 2. What is survivorship bias?
  3. 3. A strategy made 1,747% from 29 trades, and three of them brought 75% of the profit. What follows?
  4. 4. Why is an out-of-sample test done only once?
  5. 5. When should you switch a strategy off?
