In this lesson
- learn four ways to stake ETH
- find out how much staking pays and how long getting in and out takes
- learn to tell apart the risks of each way
A validator on Ethereum is like a night watchman: it has to stay awake, must not mix up its shifts, and for a job well done it gets a small wage. Whoever does not want to keep watch can pay someone. Then, though, they have to trust the watchman is not asleep – and will not run off with the building's keys.
How much is staked and what it pays#
- About 43.7 million ETH is staked, roughly 36% of the whole supply (October 2026).
- The base reward is around 2.6% a year in ETH, with tips and MEV roughly 3–3.8%.
- The reward is in ETH. If ETH halves, 3% will not save you.
Four ways#
| Way | How much ETH | Who holds the keys | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| your own validator | 32 ETH | you | a setup mistake, downtime, slashing |
| a pool with your own node | from 4 ETH (Rocket Pool) | you and the protocol | a bug in the protocol's contract |
| liquid staking | any amount | the protocol | a contract bug, the token's price slipping |
| an exchange | any amount | the exchange | the exchange going bust or freezing accounts |
Liquid staking gives you a token representing your ETH – such as stETH from Lido or rETH from Rocket Pool. You can keep using the token and the rewards show up in it. Lido holds roughly 21% of all staked ETH (mid-2026); in 2022 it was around 32%.
Getting in and out is not instant#
Joining or leaving the validators means waiting in a queue. The queue changes with demand:
- On 11 October 2026, 1.32 million ETH waited to enter (about 23 days) and 0.92 million to leave (about 16 days).
- In January 2026 the entry queue exceeded 4 million ETH, according to Lido.
Whoever needs the money now can sell a liquid staking token on an exchange – but at whatever price the market gives at that moment.
When the token does not match the price#
In June 2022, during the collapse of Celsius and 3AC, stETH traded at 0.93–0.94 ETH. Withdrawals from staking were not possible yet (they came only in April 2023), so whoever had to sell sold at a loss. Today withdrawals work and gaps tend to be smaller – but under stress they can return.
Staking is not a savings account
The 3% reward is in ETH, not in your currency. On top of that you risk a contract bug, slashing, a freeze at an exchange and waiting in the queue. On an exchange someone else holds your ETH – remember "not your keys, not your coins".
Common myths#
- "Staking is risk-free because the ETH does not go anywhere." It can get stuck in a queue, at an exchange or in a contract.
- "stETH is the same as ETH." It is a claim on ETH; on the market it can be worth less.
- "I need 32 ETH to stake." Only for your own validator. Through a pool or liquid staking less is enough.
Summary
- About 43.7 million ETH is staked; the reward is ~2.6–3.8% a year, in ETH.
- Own validator (32 ETH), pool, liquid staking, exchange – each way has different risks.
- Getting in and out goes through a queue that can stretch to weeks.
- A liquid staking token can trade below ETH, as 2022 showed.
