In this lesson
- find out what volume is and how to read it on a chart
- learn to tell a strong move from a weak one
- understand why volume on one exchange is not the whole market
Price tells you where the market moved. Volume tells you how many people were there. It is the amount traded in a given period – for the BTC/USDT pair, the number of bitcoins. On a chart it is drawn as bars below the candles: a green bar belongs to a rising candle, a red one to a falling candle.
Why volume matters#
A move with a lot of trading has a lot of money and many decisions behind it. A move on low volume may be just a few big orders in a quiet market. That is why traders say volume confirms a move:
- a breakout on high volume – real interest is behind it,
- a breakout on low volume – a higher risk that it is a false breakout,
- extreme volume in a drop – often panic and mass selling; it can mean sellers are exhausted, but also the start of another drop.
Example: the second half of 2024#
In June and July 2024 around 24,000 BTC typically changed hands on Binance each day. Then came two days that jump out of the chart:
- 5 August 2024 – panic across all markets. The price fell as low as 49,000 during the day and volume was 162,066 BTC, almost seven times more than usual. Three days later the price was back above 61,000.
- 6 November 2024 – the day of the breakout above the resistance zone around 73,800 that you know from module 1. Volume of 104,127 BTC, more than four times a normal day. For the next two weeks volume stayed at roughly twice the normal level and the price rose to almost 99,000.
- Volume (panel below the chart)
- Panic: Aug 5, 2024
- Breakout: Nov 6, 2024
For comparison: between mid-September and the end of October the price rose from about 59,000 to about 70,000 – but volume stayed at a completely ordinary level. A rise like that has less conviction behind it and is more fragile.
Crypto volume with a pinch of salt#
- One exchange is not the whole market. The chart shows volume on Binance only. Bitcoin trades on dozens of exchanges and outside them.
- Volume can be inflated. Some exchanges or traders trade with themselves to make the market look busier (so-called wash trading).
- Exchange rules change volume. From July 2022 to March 2023 Binance charged no fees for trading bitcoin – volume shot up. When the promotion ended, BTC/USDT volume fell by around 90%, even though nothing major happened in the market.
Volume confirms, it does not predict
High volume shows that something important is happening. It does not tell you whether it will end up or down. The same huge volume came with the panic in August and the breakout in November.
Common myths#
- "High volume = the price will rise." Volume is also high in panic selling.
- "Volume on my exchange is the market's volume." It is only a slice, and it can be distorted.
- "Low volume means nothing." It means less conviction – and a higher chance of a false move.
Summary
- Volume shows how much was traded – how many people are behind a move.
- A breakout on high volume is more convincing than one on low volume.
- Extreme volume comes with panics and breakouts alike – on its own it does not set the direction.
- Volume on one exchange is only a slice of the market and can be distorted.
