Withdrawing to your own wallet and your first setup

Withdrawing crypto from an exchange step by step – network, address, fee, confirmation and tracking the transaction – and a checklist for your first setup so you start without needless mistakes.

On this page

In this lesson

  • withdraw crypto from an exchange to your own wallet step by step
  • find out why the exchange asks whether the address is yours
  • get a checklist for your first setup

Congratulations – you have finished the Exchange and chart step by step course. One last skill remains: getting your crypto from the exchange to yourself. Why, and into which wallet, is taught in the Keeping crypto safe course. Here is the withdrawal itself, step by step.

EXCHANGEMY WALLETA small test first.
The right network, the whole address, a small test amount – and the coins are home.

Withdrawal step by step#

  1. In your wallet, display a receiving address – with a hardware wallet, verify it on its screen.
  2. On the exchange: Wallet → Withdraw, choose the cryptocurrency.
  3. Choose the network. It must be one your wallet supports. Send bitcoin over the Bitcoin network, not another network using the same ticker. Wrong network = the coins may not be recoverable.
  4. Paste the address and check all of it, the middle too. If you use a withdrawal whitelist, pick it from there.
  5. Enter the amount. The exchange shows the network fee and the minimum withdrawal.
  6. Confirm with your password, 2FA and possibly an email code.
  7. Track the transaction. The exchange shows its number (TXID). With it you can find the transaction in a block explorer and see how many confirmations it has.

Send a small amount first. Once it arrives, send the rest.

Why the exchange asks whose address it is#

Under European rules exchanges must find out who receives a transfer. So when you withdraw to your own wallet, it asks whether the address is yours, and for larger amounts it may want proof – for example a message signed in your wallet or a small verification payment as the app instructs. This is normal, and the exchange does it directly in its app, not an "agent" in a chat.

Your first setup#

Account

  • The exchange has a MiCA licence (checked in the national or ESMA register).
  • A strong unique password, 2FA via a passkey or an app.
  • An anti-phishing code and a withdrawal whitelist.

Trading

  • Deposits by transfer from an account in your name, with the reference code.
  • You buy on the Spot tab with a limit order and read the summary before confirming.
  • You leave futures, margin, Earn and bonuses alone for now.

Chart

  • A daily or four-hour chart, volume, one or two averages and RSI.
  • Important levels drawn, with price alerts on them.

Custody

  • Whatever you do not want to lose, you withdraw to your own wallet – first with a small test amount.

The most important thing, last

An exchange and a chart are just tools. Crypto can lose much of its value within days. Invest only money you can afford to lose – and nothing in this course is investment advice.

Summary

  • Withdrawal: an address from your wallet, the right network, checking the whole address, the fee, confirmation and tracking the TXID.
  • Send a small amount first; the exchange may ask whether the address is yours – that is normal.
  • First setup: licence, security, deposits in your name, spot and limit orders, a simple chart.
  • You can continue with Keeping crypto safe or Trading with a plan.
